Immigration and Nationality Act § 265 requires all non-U.S. citizens over 14 years old who are remaining in the United States for more than 30 days to report a change of address within the United States within 10 days of such a change. While this requirement has been a part of U.S. law for 50 years, compliance was not enforced until 2002.

Currently, there are two methods to report a change of address within the United States: 1) completing the online USCIS change of address form, or 2) filing a paper Form AR-11. Only one of the above options is necessary; there is no need to do both.

Applicants with pending USCIS filings may update their address online by accessing the USCIS Change of Address webpage. Applicants must know their USCIS receipt number(s) to change their address online. Applicants with more than one filing pending with USCIS will need to change the address for each filing to ensure USCIS sends notices and documents to the correct address.

Applicants who choose to file a paper Form AR-11 may download the form from the USCIS website. Applicants should note that USCIS service centers are not informed of the change of address when a paper Form AR-11 is filed. Hence, applicants with an application pending at a local or regional USCIS service center must also inform that office of the change of address to ensure proper communication regarding the filings. This may be accomplished via telephone by calling 800-375-5283.

Form AR-11 requires the applicant to report his/her name, immigration status (visitor, permanent resident, student, other), country of citizenship, date of birth, present and previous address, port of entry into the U.S., date of entry into the U.S., and the date his/her stay in the U.S. expires. The “A number” (many temporary visa holders do not have A numbers) and address of employer or school are optional. Each non-U.S. citizen member of the applicant’s family must file the form upon relocation within the U.S.

The completed Form AR-11 should be sent to the following address:

U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Citizenship and Immigration Services
Attn: Change of Address
1344 Pleasants Drive
Harrisonburg, VA 22801
